Wireless Messaging is the “pushing” of information to and from mobile devices, allowing users to receive and send time-sensitive notifications and maintain important contacts whilst on the move. It includes Short Message Service (SMS), Enhanced Message Service (EMS), and Multimedia Message Service (MMS).
SMS involves sending a text-message of 140-160 alpha numeric characters to a cell phone or pager, and holds significant advantages over the use of mobile email for sending important information. Typically, both parties are in near real time communication, thereby extending an open communications channel to both the sender and the recipient.
Subsequently, companies have adopted SMS messaging as a key communications strategy for internal and external requirements. This has fueled the growth of Application to Peer (A2P) traffic. For example, Customer Relations Management (CRM), Ticketing, Field Sales Updates, Remote Monitoring and Tracking, and Mobile Banking may utilise A2P messaging technology.
Whilst there is a rapid uptake in multimedia messaging and mobile data traffic, SMS messaging will still retain an important role in the global communications industry.
